Harrisonburg

The Charity: Alzheimers Association Memory Walk

The Girl: Wish I had caught her name…

The Alzheimers Association Memory Walk (or AAMW, sound it out) has a local chapter in Harrisonburg, Virgina. If those girls are willing to stand out in the sun on a college football Saturday in a college town, for a good cause like this, you can click the “donate button” and give a few $$ bills.

Top Five things to do in Harrisonburg:

Five: Check out James Madison University’s campus. Catch a football game if you can.

Four: Visit a vineyard outside the city, they are gorgeous. (Better if during a wedding reception).

Three: Go to Jess’ Lunch.

Two: Find the Showker’s. Everyone that knows them, loves them, and you should meet them.

One: Go to a wedding for two great American families. (Showker’s and Lucas’s together as one).

Things I passed on: I think I pretty much covered the city. Cow tipping?

Good places to stay: Jameson Inn (the establishment itself is above average, but if you talk to Joan the manager about good Rum from the Caribbean, you’ll get the best service of your life.)

Harrisonburg’s Ratings. On a scale from 1 to Boston: 6.1

Harrisonburg has great people, quaintness (real word?), farmland (country feel), and girls from JMU.

Harrisonburg doesn’t have much going on, mountains, ocean, or lots of entertainment of any sort.

The story: I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Harrisonburg, but that was likely because of the wedding I attended, and the wonderful people I was surrounded by. I wouldn’t necessarily put this on a top ten city list (despite the flack I’m sure I’ll catch from the Harrisonburg contingent that reads this). If you like the country, the south, and being connected to your faith- Harrisonburg is the place for you. Also, seems like a wonderful place to raise a family and live a more settled life. Maybe later in life I’ll be ready for that, but for Harrisonburg will remain the home of one of my favorite families, and memories I cherish from my friends getting married. I spent most of my time getting ready for, and being in the wedding- but I definitely recommend Jess’ Lunch (It is a diner style restaurant, that is a Harrisonburg landmark, or so I’m told).
