The Charity: Environment Texas (Austin Section)
The Guy: John Montalbano (I mean, just look at this guy- he is really intense)
Currently working to shut down a coal dirty coal plant that provides most of Austin’s energy. He brings up an interesting point… Austin considers itself the most environmentally friendly city in Texas, and it still gets a majority of its energy from coal… help Texas stop sucking… (if possible).
Top Five things to do in Austin (I did a version of all these things):
Five: Visit 6th Street for some crazy times
Four: University of Texas at Austin (Home of the Longhorns)
Three: The Capital
Two: See thousands of bats fly out from the bridge in formation
One: Eat local Tex Mex (Delicious)
Things I passed on: Finding this guy, drinking heavily on 6th street (or fifth or fourth).
Good places to stay: Austin Motel.
Austin’s Ratings. On a scale from 1 to Boston: 7
Austin has this guy, a huge university, nice weather, and a cool motto/vibe “Keep Austin Weird”, and plenty of nightlife.
Austin doesn’t have independence from Texas (though it feels like it), the ocean/water, or mountains.
The story: Austin has some weirdo’s, but I guess that is what they’re known for. I on the other hand was lucky enough to be shown the sites by the wonderful and talented Ayano (any marketing jobs, send them my way- I’ll pass them along to her). We ate some delicious tex mex, before I went to the Austin Motel. Really cool place to stay, fits with the motto. Early morning ride to the capital, where I broke a few rules and made it to the top of the dome, which may or may not have been velvet roped off. Then I made my way to UT, but felt like I was posing as a college kid too much so I left, but their campus is pretty, and the stadiums are huge. Then I found my way to my next flight. Highlight of the trip to Austin had to be searching, and failing to find this guy, who would have added so much to the trip- but now I have something to go back for. I’m a little afraid this is what the future has in store for me.
LBJ museum -- highlight of the UT campus (seriously, everyone I've dragged there has loved it. plus it's the only free presidential museum!)
